The Backstory
Growing up in small town Saskatchewan, in a predominately Mennonite town with a population of under 1000, dinner, or as we called it, supper, with Vareniki and Worscht were common in many families. There were many community gatherings with great conversation, great food, and lots of love. I left home at an early age and had many new adventures, and like many young people, I was soon exposed to and enjoyed many beautiful cultures and ethnicities. The meat and potatoes prairie girl had grown to know and love many new and diverse flavours and culinary fusions. As time past and I had my own family, I became so much more aware of the value of roots and tradition, and the irreplaceable heritage that we all must pass on to keep the stories alive. I deeply cherish those things that I once took so for granted. So when the world becomes quiet and I am having fond memories of my childhood and family back home, the taste of Vareniki and worscht and all the trappings of a table full of Mennonite food and perhaps the sound of a little Plautdietsch, still warm my soul. While my Plautdietsch is now only a few lines of memory, I have retained my love of cooking in those traditional Mennonite ways and I would be so honoured to share with you, a small piece of that large spread table I remember so well. I have taken a few liberties, but I have tried to remain true to the textures and flavours of old.
As you bite into this experience, I hope you will hear your groosmame's voice if this is a part of your history, and I hope you will feel the warmth from my heart if you are tasting it for the first time or visiting an acquired culinary love.
My name is Cherry, and I thank you for allowing me to share a little piece of my life story.
So with humility of person and pride of heritage, I offer you Menno Nite
